OPEN STUDIO - "Piedra Lumbre Hombres"

Art, Friendship, and a Broadway Phantom - Open Studio Weekend in Abiquiú

Abiquiú, NM -   This Valentine’s Day weekend, world-renowned artist Doug Coffin will open his Abiquiú studio for the first time in over 20 years, hosting a special two-day Open Studio with Broadway star and fellow artist, Rick Hilsabeck.

“You never know who you’re gonna meet at the Post Office,” quipped Rick. “Doug and I really did meet at the Abiquiu Post Office and became fast friends. I have immense respect for his work and enjoy solving the problems of the world with Doug over a glass of good red wine.”

Rick Hilsabeck left a successful career on Broadway where he starred as the Phantom  in The Phantom of the Opera, Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Big Davey in Billy Elliott the Musical in order to pursue his vision and passion around visual art.  An accomplished oil painter, Rick brings a stunning new body of work: landscape oil paintings on canvas enhanced with gold, silver, and copper leaf, glowing with texture and light.

Host, Native American artist Doug Coffin will be showing a wide-ranging collection of work, from his signature totemic sculptures to mixed-media paintings and jewelry. Doug’s pieces draw inspiration from Native cultural forms, abstract symbolism, and bold geometric shapes, creating work that feels timeless, powerful, and deeply personal.

The landscape of the Piedra Lumbre (“Shining Stone”), has inspired artists for decades. Rick and Doug are united by twin inspirations - Doug’s Native American roots and Rick’s spiritual bond with this unique landscape.

Expect great art, engaging conversation, and the rare opportunity to experience two distinct artistic voices side by side - no tickets, no singing, just art up close and personal.
